Departmental Scholarly Activity

As a part of the only academic medical center in the state of Mississippi, our department works tirelessly in the area of anesthesiology research. We have strong resident, nurse anesthetist, and faculty participation on the state and national level at numerous academic meetings and conferences every year. We would like to recognize and thank our physician scientists who have published research, case reports, and book chapters in 2020. There are also innumerable grand rounds, conference presentations, and ongoing research projects that are too many to mention. 

Certified registered nurse anesthetist, Jonathan Vaughn, defended his dissertation, “A Surgical Collaboration Between an Academic Medical Center and a Local, Private, Community-Based Hospital” to obtain his Doctorate of Healthcare Administration. The dissertation looked at the surgical collaboration between UMMC Jackson and Merit Health Madison. From a quantitative standpoint, total surgical cases and total OR minutes at UMMC were measured 18 months before the surgical collaboration start date of July 2019, and total surgical cases and total OR minutes at UMMC and Merit Health Madison 18 months were measured before and 18 months after the surgical collaboration start date of July 2019. From a qualitative standpoint, the surgeons’ perceptions of the surgical collaboration were explored.
